Seoul Festival of Lights 2009


Light of Culture woven by threads of glittering history and creation

On Dec. 19, the Seoul Festival of Lights 2009 will start its 38-day event with a lighting ceremony to celebrate the beginning of the Seoul-style light festival. The lighting ceremony will kick off as of 6:00 p.m. at the Statue of King Sejong the Great in Gwanghwamun Square. With a countdown clock ticking toward the beginning of the ceremony, a line of light bulbs will shine its light to the sky and media facades will show their fantastic festival of light. With all of the bulbs at the Gwanghwamun Square shining their light, the square will create a brilliant light. The 38-day festival will present a variety of events to citizens, including experiential programs, a photo zone and special events for Christmas and year-end holiday seasons.

Another joy of Gwanghwamun Square, outdoor ice skating rink

This winter, an outdoor ice skating rink will be opened at the site of the Flower Carpet in Gwanghwamun Square. The ice rink, with a total space of 2,250 square meters, will consist of three rinks; 20 × 20 meters for a small rink, 20 × 30 meters for a medium rink and 25 meters × 25 meters for a large rink. The small rink will have sledges available for children only. Each rink will be connected with ice-covered roads and there will be various facilities for convenience, including rest rooms, rental rooms and cafes. Adding to that, there will be various events; an opening ceremony (with a figure-skating performance), Christmas (fireworks or a laser show), New Year’s Day (top spinning, ice sledges) and an exhibition of ice sculptures (Haechi, Gwanghwamun).

Winter story of Seoul Plaza : Experiencing Antarctic wildness

When you go to Seoul Plaza, you can experience Antarctic wildness! This winter, Seoul Plaza will be transformed into a site allowing visitors to experience Antarctic wildness. The site will be consist mainly of two sections; a mock-up of the King Sejong Station and aurora shows (Auroras, named after the Roman goddess of Aurora, are natural light displays observed at southern and northern polar regions.) At the mock-up of the King Sejong Station, a research station for the nation’s Antarctic research program, visitors can enjoy a variety of shows featuring penguins, sea lions, seaweeds, real parts of Antarctic glaciers and miniaturized models of the Arctic and Antarctica. Other exhibitions will include the Meet Polar Lands exhibition hall, miniaturized models of the King Sejong Station and Araon, the nation’s first icebreaker, a chronology of the King Sejong Station and the nation’s Antarctic research program, daily life of researchers at the King Sejong Station, a site to build the second research station in Antarctica, video conferencing with researchers at the King Sejong Station and a video showing images of polar lands. The aurora shows will create light featuring aurora, allowing viewers to feel as if they are in Antarctica. In addition, other events will include a picture-taking zone and an exhibition featuring photos of polar lands.

Seoul City Hall Monument for New Year

Happy 2010 – The Year of Tiger In the wake of 2010, the Year of Tiger, the monument features Bukhansan (Mt.) surrounding Seoul as a tiger, with the sun of hope rising above the mountain. The monument is aimed at delivering a message of hope to people.
